Congratulations to RN Skyler McCoy on earning her official certification as a Wound Care Nurse! Skyler is the Wound Care Coordinator at Juniper Village at Brookline’s Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation building, and this certification represents her experience and knowledge in her field. Recently, we chatted with Skyler about her family roots, being part of the Juniper team, and exciting things ahead.
Juniper: Congratulations on your certification as a wound care nurse! What led you to the nursing field?
Skyler: I knew I wanted to be a nurse from a young age. My mom is a nurse and I always thought I wanted to work in pediatrics as she did. But once I started in geriatrics as a nursing assistant, nothing ever compared.
Juniper: What brought you to State College?
Skyler: I’m originally from a small town in upstate South Carolina. I moved to State College in 2016 with my then fiancée, now husband. He is a student at Penn State and will graduate in May 2019. When I moved here I started as a per diem RN for Juniper and then transitioned to the wound care nurse position.
Juniper: You’re a native Southerner! What was it like making the transition to Pennsylvania?
Skyler: I actually grew up near Clemson University, so the small college town atmosphere is similar. After two winters here, I am still not comfortable driving in the snow! But it is beautiful. I do miss the variety of food that the South has to offer. Whenever I go home to visit family, I make a schedule of all the restaurants I want to go to — mainly including fried chicken and biscuits! But living in this area helped me to be much healthier in that respect. The other thing I miss is living close to the beach, but I could take advantage of the Pennsylvania winters and learn snowboarding!
Juniper: What do you like most about your job?
Skyler: One of my favorite things about this job is the variety! Because we provide care to people who are here for acute rehab, as well as to long-term residents, I get to see a lot of different things and meet different people. I also enjoy working with a team that is so focused on making every chapter of life the best it can be.
Juniper: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Skyler: We spend much of our free time with family and taking our energetic puppy, a three-year-old German Shepherd, on hikes in the great outdoors. Right now, our only child is four-legged, but in early 2019 we will be anticipating the arrival of our first baby! So, we’re also busy with the craziness of baby prep!
The next time you’re visiting our Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation building, be sure to introduce yourself to Skyler and congratulate her on her certification!
