If you have visited Juniper Village at Brookline Senior Living, you may have been lucky enough to meet a wonderful member of our family and team, Buddy! Buddy is a rescue dog belonging to Genesis Rehabilitation’s Wendy Reitz.
At a young age, Buddy was surrendered to a high-kill shelter where he was in poor condition. Wendy told me that she received a call that Buddy was scheduled to be euthanized the following week. She went to meet him, wrapped him up in a towel, and took him home without a second thought. Buddy received the care he needed and now is the brother of 3 other dogs at home and a member of our Juniper family! Wendy brings Buddy in to visit with residents for a few hours several times a week. Buddy loves to meet new people and always enjoys pets. One of Buddy’s favorite activities is curling up on the laps of residents in the café for “News and Views” and a hot cocoa.
“It’s amazing how he knows when to be calm and relaxed with the residents,” Wendy said.
Animals have a unique ability to help people to heal and cope with various medical conditions. For many people, pets are part of the family. Research shows that interactions with animals can improve mood, increase connectivity with others, and promote calm feelings. We are so lucky to have Buddy regularly visit to provide these benefits to our residents. The next time you stop into Juniper Village at Brookline, keep an eye out for Buddy! We’re sure you’ll be greeted with a wagging tail!
